BioPersonality: At first glance, Kazuma is the typical shounen-style badass: he has a hair-trigger temper and attitude like whoa. If he doesn't like you, he will hit you. Even if he does like you, if you say something he doesn't like, he'll hit you. If he really doesn't like you, he'll probably give you a taste of his Alter, as well. Impulsive to the bone, he rarely thinks things through before acting--which often lands him in situations way over his head. He likewise has a bit of a problem with authority figures--or anyone else who thinks they can tell him how to live or what he can or can't do. These two characteristics contribute to his immediate clash with Ryuhou which sparks a series-long rivalry between the two.
First appearances can be deceiving, however, and Kazuma is actually much more complex than he might appear at first. Although he can definitely be brash, loud, rude, and vulgar to those who irritate him (which, at times, seems to be almost everyone), he is also fiercely loyal to his friends and would do anything to help them--including risking his own life. His Alter is central to his identity, and on several occasions he defines himself first and foremost as an Alter-user. Although confident in his abilities, he oddly enough also seems to suffer from a massive inferiority complex--perhaps because everyone has labelled him as a good-for-nothing bum for so long that he's come to believe it himself. Likewise, after his first battle with Ryuhou, he is dismissed as a "C-class Alter" which in turn causes him to become obsessed with proving himself to be his rival's equal.
Despite his reputation as "the Alter-user who'll do anything for money," money seems to hold little value to him and on a couple of occasions he gives away whatever he has to anyone who seems to be in worse straits than himself--even if it means that he'll suffer for it later. But later holds little significance for him either; Kazuma rarely looks ahead to the future--or back to the past--but lives entirely in the moment, rarely wasting time or energy on regret or introspection.
Background: Twenty-two years ago, Japan's Kanagawa prefecture was separated from the mainland by a series of earthquakes. This not only caused widespread death and destruction, but also cut the survivors off from all political and social institutions. The area was almost immediately plunged into lawlessness and chaos and soon became known as the Lost Ground. After the cataclysm, some of the citizens banded together to construct the Walled City, re-establishing the social order. However, most of the inhabitants--or Inners, as they came to be called--still lived outside the walls, desperately poor and subject to the whims of marauding gangs. Unknown to most at the time, the earthquakes also opened the door to another world, and as a result, approximately 2% of the population born after that time possessed what came to be known as Alter ability: the mental ability to transform any matter into a form appropriate to the one weilding the power.
Born and raised in the Lost Ground, Kazuma is one of that rare 2%. His Alter is called Shell-bullet, and is basically a metallic alloy that forms an armor over his right arm and has heavy destructive capabilities.
Even Kazuma doesn't know much about his past--he's not even sure that Kazuma is his real name. What is known is that his parents died when he was very young, and he has no memories of them whatsoever. As a small child, he was taken care of by a young man named Straight Cougar, another Alter-user whose power (called Radical Good Speed) consists of the ability to make anything--vehicles, himself, etc.--move at incredible speeds. Although they refer to each other as "brother," whether or not they are actually related is never made clear. It is clear, however, that whatever their actual relationship, Cougar had a tremendous influence on Kazuma; teaching him about his power and how to defend himself (their fighting moves are almost identical) as well as instilling him with at least a rudimentary sense of right and wrong, and they share many of the same mannerisms, as well. At some unspecified point in their past (presumably after Kazuma is able to take care of himself), Cougar simply disappears from Kazuma's life, not reappearing again until shortly after the beginning of the series when it is revealed that he has joined HOLY: an organization comprised entirely of Alter-users sworn to bring law and order to the Lost Ground. Kazuma appears to carry a grudge against his "big bro" and doesn't really seem to forgive Cougar for abandoning him until close to the end of the series.
What happens during the intervening years between Kazuma's childhood and the opening of the series is never really specified, but when we first meet Kazuma, he is living in a small village in the Lost Ground, working at various odd jobs on the outlying farms. Although she isn't aware of it herself, Kanami is an Alter-user as well with the power to form a mental bond with those she's close to. And so things continue until one day when, while on what seemed an ordinary job to help some friends whose territory was being threatened by a rival gang, Kazuma had his first encounter with HOLY and meets Ryuhou who has been sent to capture him. The two fight, and for the first time in his life, Kazuma is defeated and taken prisoner. Declared an Alter criminal, he is sentenced to hard labor in one of HOLY's many labor camps, but manages to escape and with Kimishima's help, flees back to the desert.
Gradually, both Kazuma and Kimishima come to realize that HOLY and its parent organization, HOLD--both funded by the mainland government--have a hidden agenda. Alter-users are being hunted down and forced to either join HOLY...or mysteriously disappear, and entire villages are being taken into custody, the inhabitants forced to work in the camps. In an effort to keep Kazuma from taking HOLY on single-handedly, Kimishima assembles group of the most powerful Native Alters he knows, and together, they make a stand against HOLY. Unfortunately, HOLY knows all about the rebellion, and sets a trap, capturing several of their friends. As a result, Kazuma goes back to HOLY headquarters, intending to infiltrate the organization and free his friends. Again, things don't quite go as planned, and the Alter users he had come to rescue are spirited away to the mainland for some unknown purpose.
Realizing that he needs to become more powerful if he ever hopes to defeat HOLY, Kazuma makes a journey to the Alter Forest--a place that Cougar told him about when he was a child, and that seems to possess a higher concentration of Alter power than anywhere else in the Lost Ground. While there, he engages in a pivotal battle with a mysterious crystalline Alter creature, and his Alter evolves a second, more powerful--but also highly unstable--form. More power comes with a hefty price, however, as after he uses it, scars begin to appear on Kazuma's arm and face, and his arm will spasm and ache for hours after its use.
Once again, Kazuma begins to actively fight against HOLY--who is also hunting him in return. The fight becomes even more bitter when Kimishima is killed, sending Kazuma into a berserker rage in which he takes out at least two HOLY fleets. This brings about yet another showdown with Ryuhou. Determined not to be defeated this time, Kazuma pushes into his newly acquired form only to lose control of it. With the huge amounts of Alter energy both he and Ryuhou release during their battle, a second cataclysm is triggered, reforming the Lost Ground yet again, and a door to the Alter world is opened and both combatants disappear without a trace.
Eight months later, he turns up again, fighting in an underground arena and seems to have lost himself. At this point in the series, his personality becomes much darker; he makes no effort to find Kanami and make sure she's all right. It isn't until after Mimori Kiryuu and Asuka Tachibana (two members of HOLY/HOLD) find him--while actually looking for Ryuhou--and remind him of who he is that he once again takes up the fight against HOLY.
By the time he meets up with Ryuhou again, much has changed. After their disappearance, Ryuhou temporarily lost his memory and during his wanderings, wound up in the same village Kanami was living in. They strike up a friendship, and he is able to see what is happening in the Inner with his own eyes. Even after he regains his memories, he discovers that the Inners and Natives aren't all as lawless as he had been told. And at this point, he decides to leave HOLY. Once Kazuma, with Cougar's help, rejoins them, they decide to band together to fight against HOLY.
Although it isn't clear until late in the series, HOLY is actually under the command of a refined Alter User named Mujo Kyouji. When Mujo kidnaps Kanami, intending to use her Alter ability to increase his own power, Kazuma pretty much loses it...then decides to go get her back. Ryuhou accompanies him--much to Kazuma's irritation--and the two return to the City to confront Mujo. After defeating him, they then take on the entire Mainland army, finally freeing the Lost Ground. Once their homeland is freed, Kazuma and Ryuhou are finally free to finish their own long-delayed fight. Although, by this point, neither really feels the same hatred toward the other as previously, they still can't quite move on until things are settled between them. While Mimori and Kanami watch from a distance, the two battle it out, finally beating each other unconscious. Although the fight seems to end in a draw, the two can now leave their pasts behind and move on.
Notes on Kazuma's previous stay in ME:
Probably the most significant event during Kazuma's time in Memento Eden was his relationship with Ryuhou which began not too long after his arrival. Upon their first meeting, each felt inexplicably drawn to the other, as if they had known each other before. This turned out to be the case, although they wouldn't know that for sure until a few months later when some of their memories returned. They became friends but quickly escalated to dating and eventually moved in together after their room mates, Riku and Ichigo, offered to switch apartments. Several months later, they left the Ari Apartments and moved into their own place, along with Kazuma's cat and dog (Killer and J.R., respectively). When not entangled in the frequent bizarre events the island decided to throw at them, they lived relatively quietly, although Kazuma's job as a bouncer at the local bar and Ryuhou's as a patrolman prevented them from spending as much time together as they would have liked.
Kazuma was also inadvertently responsible for the formation of "La Resistance." Frustrated by seeing everyone else regaining their memories (or so it seemed to him at the time), he "called bullshit" on The Powers That Be and threatened that if everyone's memories weren't returned, he'd find a way to take them back. Much to his surprise, several other people thought this was a good idea. Although the loosely-formed group did hatch a few plots, amusingly enough, something would always happen to prevent them from carrying them out, such as Ichigo's Hollow episode which ended with Kazuma spending several days under the clerics' care, or Ryuhou's temporary death during Silv's rampage.
When he finally did begin to regain some of his memories, Kazuma was more than a little disturbed by them. Up until this time, he didn't even know that he was an Alter user, and the brief flashes he remembered of himself fighting and killing while transformed worried him a great deal. This only worsened when he finally remembered the exact nature of his and Ryuhou's relationship before arriving in Memento Eden: that instead of being friends and working together as they had believed, they were, in fact, enemies fighting on opposing sides. Needless to say, this revelation put something of a strain on their relationship for a time as both struggled to reconcile their memories of the enemy they had fought back home with the person they had learned to care for in Memento Eden.
An uneasy resolution was finally reached when Ryuhou suggested that since they still hadn't regained all their memories and had no idea of when these events had occurred, they should, perhaps, try to put the past behind them and move on. Kazuma agreed, and aside from brief flashes of anger when something Ryuhou says or does causes their old rivalry to flare up, for the most part, he has managed to do so. And so things stood until one night in July when Kazuma disappeared without a trace while on his way home from work.
